House Remodel

The Truth about Our Remodel

Well… My husband bought our home in 2011 before we met. He saw potential!! To say the house was unique is an understatement! I’m absolutely positive that had we looked at the house together I would have said umm No Way!!!! So you can imagine my anxiousness as we got married and I packed up my adorable apartment and made the move to the “unique” house! At first I was careful with my approach in suggesting some minor changes. But then something took over, stress maybe, and I began to be not so subtle. I began to hear myself say things like “that is awful!!” And “who picks that color???” Thankfully Ryan is patient and very even tempered. He would calmly say, “What color would you like to paint it?” Or “What change should we make?” That brings me to my Pinterest “Home” board. I began pinning paint colors, hardwood floors, fireplace mantels, carpet colors and much more. I used Pinterest to find blogs that shared design info and how to remodel on a budget!! Pinterest helped me to decide what I liked and where to get it for a good price!! Thankfully we went to stores knowing just want we wanted!! We mainly shopped at Lowes, Ikea, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, local vintage antique stores, flea markets, auctions and local barn sales!! Hope you enjoy our vintage farmhouse style remodel!!

Let's start with the kitchen. Oh the kitchen! Electric yellow paint covered the walls. The rest of the kitchen was made up of black counter tops, black and white 80's style checkered backsplash, brown cabinets and grey tile floors. Whew! Something had to be done!!

We decided to use chalk paint for our kitchen cabinets! The color is Old White by Annie Sloan. We get our chalk paint from Edwin Loy a local home decor store in Westerville.

We are so happy we took on the kitchen renovation! Our light fixture and table came from Pier One Imports. We spent countless hours researching hardwood floors, sinks and countertops. We decided to get our hardwoods, faucet and wainscoting backsplash from Lowe's. We ventured to Ikea for our farm sink (DOMSJÖ double bowl $312) and our butcher block counter tops (Akerby $99). We got two of the  73 1/4"  ÅKERBY oak butcher block. The wall color is Oatmeal by Benjamin Moore.

Now for the dining room... Brace yourselves!!!! Our dining room had a roof! Yes a roof with shingles and everything! See for yourself!

I would love to go on and on about the roof but there are no words! We ripped that bad boy down, patched the walls and painted! We used Oatmeal by Benjamin Moore for the wall color!

Our chandelier is from Lowe's!

I found this mantle from a local salvage barn

I got this cool barn gate from The Vintage Cottage! Such a charming vintage store with amazing finds!

The dining room carpet was in bad shape!! We carried the dark hardwoods through the entryway and into the dining room! Speaking of the entryway... It was a tight space that didn't function real well. My father in law and Ryan were ripping up the old floors and Ryan said "Lets take out the closet and open this up!" So we did! I don't think my father in law was ready for that decision to be made so quickly!

Our entryway ladder was from our barn reception!

Our last major remodel was the living room! Oh was it major!! If you thought it couldn't get any worse, you were wrong!! The living room walls were tiled! Yes, tiled! Floor to ceiling! A beautiful brick fireplace was covered in the same awful tile. The carpet was old and needed updated! Take a look..

The living room remodel actually started by me asking Ryan if I could have a fireplace mantel. I could see his wheels start turning instantly. In true Ryan fashion, he would do whatever it took to get me a mantel. So we gutted the entire room, re-drywalled and painted the walls Mt. Rainier Gray by Benjamin Moore.

Ryan called a brick expert to look at our brick, but our brick could not be saved.

We went through Lowe's for our new carpet and are so happy with how it turned out! We get a lot of compliments on it!

We made the decision to glass tile over the brick. Ryan built the mantel frame and we painted it white. We used an old beam that we stained dark for the top of the mantel. Before I knew it, Ryan had given me a mantel! Which is without a doubt my favorite thing to decorate!!

We have enjoyed hunting for vintage pieces for our living room!

Most of our finds have come from local barn sales, antique and vintage stores!

Some of our pieces were DIY projects. Like this sign Ryan made me for my birthday!!

We replaced our existing door to the basement with an old door that we used as decor for our barn reception.

  1. Sarah,
I am just AMAZED at your sense of style. These rooms could be featured in any decorating magazine! You put the most unusual combinations together. I think that you and Ryan should start a design service. Ryan could do all the contractor work and the carpentry, and you could do the design and decorating. There's a show on HGTV with a husband-wife couple that renovates old houses, and they put me in mind of you two. Blessings on this beautiful home and all who enter it ...
